The airport Leonardo Da Vinci, as regards the volume of traffic, is the first transit airport in Italy and is similar to a real city, as regards its size, equipment and staff. Every day more than 150,000 people pass here, including passengers and employees. The entire area of the airport is 16.1 million square metres big. The buildings have an area of 7,000,000 cubic metres, the water supply system consists of pipelines with a total length of 130 km and the grid consists of a total of 970 km of cabling. There are 7.5 km long tunnel for the service. It is disposed of 35 tons of waste daily.

The two airports handle together a combined air traffic of about 40 million passengers per year, but a major development plan that has already been approved (Master Plan) provides an extension to the north of the airport Leonardo Da Vinci, with additional 1,300 hectares to the existing 1400 hectarse to arrive at a traffic of 55 million passengers in 2020 and 90-100 million passengers in 2044.
The connections to the city are guaranteed by two railway lines: the line "Leonardo Express" that carries passengers from Rome Termini to the airport Fiumicino, this train is situated inside the international airport terminal and trains run every 30 minutes and non-stop, they do 37 km in 31 minutes.
