The Centro Storico (historic centre) of the city covers, from the administrative point of view, the scope of the Primo Municipio (first town hall), it is a vast area in which there is an abundance of goods of historical, archaeological and artistic interest, which has been recognized as "world heritage" by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
The area is divided in the current twenty-two districts (from the Latin word "regions" or "Region") and their number and perimeter varied over time, starting from the Roman period and later the Middle Ages.
The entire area of the historic centre is enclosed within the Aurelian Walls, except the districts of Prati and Borgo which are located on the right bank of the Tiber, together with the district of Trastevere.
The enormous extension of the historic centre and the tens of thousands of cultural objects make it impossible to describe the district in a few sentences.
Besides the city bus lines, the historic centre is served by the underground (lines A and B), which has several stations in the area and makes travelling a lot easy.
