The EUR district is located in the southern part of the city and originates from the intention of Mussolini to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the March on Rome with a major international event: the universal exhibition in Rome (EUR, in fact), which would have been held in 1942. The beginning of the World War II interrupted the project which was completed during the 50s and 60s, in times of the "economic boom".
It is characterized by a strict urban geometry and by imposing architecture and you can admire several examples of buildings that are real and true manifestations of the rationalist architecture. The Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro, also known as "Colosseo Quadrato", is one of them and it has been used by various directors for movies and commercials due to the metaphysical atmosphere created by its presence.
Also worth mentioning is Palazzo dello Sport or PalaEur by Pier Luigi Nervi and Marcello Piacentini which, after the Olympics of1960 for which it was built, hosted over time, in addition to sports events and various conference events of political parties, the most important musical events in the capital.
