The Pantheon is one of the main monuments of the city and impresses with its grandeur and the engineering solutions adopted.
It is located in Piazza della Rotonda, in the heart of the centro storico (historic centre) of Rome, a few meters away from Piazza Navona, Palazzo Madama, the seat of the senate of the republic, and Palazzo Montecitorio, the seat of the house of representatives.
The construction of the present building dates from 120-125 AD, on the ashes of the original structure that was destroyed by fire, with the large writing that appears on its facade being form the first construction.
The plan of the structure is circular and has a diameter of 43 meters and is surrounded by walls which partly are thick more than six metres on which the dome with decreasing cassettes is laid on, which are smaller towards the top. Inside at the top of the dome you can see a round hole with a diameter of nine metres, through which, according to a popular legend, rain water would never enter: in fact, water enters and is collected by drains placed on the floor.
