Around Piazza di Spagna there are lots of great historical and artistic sights and it is therefore one of the most visited and appreciated places in the city.
The main attraction is, without a doubt, the Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps), a work from the first half of the 700, leading from the square to the top of the hill Pincio; the stair is composed of several staircases which are interrupted by terraces from where you have a magnificent view.
At the foot of the stairs there is the Fontana della Barcaccia, a work from the beginning of 600, realized by Gian Lorenzo Bernini who had been commissioned by Pope Urban VIII to commemorate a historic flood due to which the waters of the Tiber arrived up to the point where the monument is situated.
The Fontana della Barcaccia is located below the level of the roads in order to compensate the low pressure of the water that comes from the aqueduct Virgin, and to ensure its continuous operation.
On the square in front of the building of the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See, there is the Colonna dell'Immacolata Concezione (column of the immaculate conception) from the ancient Rome; it was found during excavations in 1777 and was located at Piazza di Spagna in 1857 by 200 fire fighters on behalf of Pope Pius IX.. Each year on December 8, at the feast of the immaculate conception, some fire fighters, in the presence of the Pope, climb up to the top of the statue to lay down a wreath of flowers.
Near the square there is Via Margutta, famous for having hosted many artists such as De Chirico, Guttmann, Federico Fellini, Anna Magnani.
The famous scenes from the movie of the 50s ”Vacanze romane” ("Roman Holiday") with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn certainly helped to increase the international fame of the stairs and the entire centro storico (historic centre).
