The Olympic stadium is located inside the Foro Italico, a huge complex of buildings and sports facilities on the slopes of Monte Mario, in the north of the city.
The current structure has its origin from the ancient Stadio dei Cipressi, the original structure was built in the 30s. This stadium had no wall structure, but took advantage of a natural basin that was located at the foot of Monte Mario. The stands were made of grass terraces.
In view of the XVII Olympics in Rome in 1960, a real stadium with walls was designed, an imposing structure that would hold100,000 people, hence the name "Stadio dei Centomilaö. This project, however, was slightly reduced due to lack of resources and environmental characteristics.
The stadium was inaugurated on May 17, 1953 with the game Italy - Hungary and in 1960 it was the site of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games and place of the competitions of athletics.
The special feature of the structure was its low altitude from the ground: this was possible because, as with the old Stadio dei Cipressi, the natural shape of the ground, like a basin, was used, by which the court appeared to lie below the outer layer of the stadium. With respect to the great structure this caused a perfect integration with the environment, providing an attractive visual effect.
On the occasion of the 1990 World Cup, the Olympic Stadium underwent a radical change: the plant was completely demolished and rebuilt in reinforced concrete, the curves were placed closer to each other by nine metres and all sectors of the stadium got a roof with a white ceiling.
The new version surpassed the 80,000 seats, so it was the second stadium in terms of capacity, after the Meazza Stadium in Milan.
The total reconstruction ignored the principles for the integration of environmental concerns that existed with the previous structures. In particular, the coverage led to a significant increase in the tribune, which caused a strong visual impression.
The latest changes were made in 2008: these included the retrofitting of the system to meet the UEFA rules, the replacement of all seats, the installation of two new high-definition video screens and a reduction of seats, bringing the current capacity to 72,698 spectators.
