In February 2005, the hospital San Raffaele Pisana in Rome was entitled IRCCS (Institute for hospitalisation and care with scientific character) because of its excellent skilled work of care and research.
The hospital is located in Via della Pisana 235, on the western edge of the city and is part of the Gruppo San Raffaele SpA, a group that has a variety of other entities, both within the city and throughout the national territory.
The hospital is aimed primarily at people with neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, particularly with regard to rehabilitation.
Its assistance takes place in various ways: by hospital admission for cases of complex nature, or inpatient or outpatient care.
Inside the facility there is an important educational centre, in collaboration with the university of Rome "La Sapienza", which has 5 courses of level I:
- Techniques of Medical Radiology and Radiation Therapy
- Nursing
- Biomedical Laboratory Technology
- Physiotherapy
- Speech Therapy
In addition to these courses there are other courses and master.
Internships are either done at the IRCCS San Raffaele or in other facilities of the Centre: San Raffaele Nomentana, San Raffaele Portuense, San Raffaele Velletri.
The institute is active, in addition to health care and education, in the scientific research: the patient may be asked to participate in research projects, through a free "informed consent" with the utmost respect for the rights of patients. This research, carried out in collaboration with other institutions and with the Italian universities, led to numerous publications in international scientific journals.
