The hospital Santo Spirito in Sasso is located in Lungotevere Sassia 1, not far away from the Castel Sant'Angelo.
It was founded by Pope Innocent III in 1198 by extending the old hospital Schola Saxonum of King Ina: hence the name "in Sassia”.
It was then entrusted to Guido Montpellier, the founder of the Ordine Ospedaliero di Santo Spirito (Hospital Order of the Holy Spirit) for the care of abandoned children, orphans and illegitimate children, giving them food, shelter and a modest education.
The hospital became an orphanage with strict rules regarding the foundlings (abandoned children) and the nurses, written as the oldest hospital order that is known, the Liber Regulae.
The hospital was greatly expanded between 1471 and 1478 by Pope Sixtus IV.
In 1571, to allow further development, the Palazzo del Commendatore was built next to it because the hospital care was extended to all specialties. That building was completely rebuilt after its destruction by the Lanzichenecchi: it is now the seat of the hospital administration and Lancisiana Biblioteca (library).
Subsequently, the hospital became an avant-garde centre for the treatment of malarial fever for the use of "China-China".
Further extensions were carried out in 1650 by Alexander VII, who opened a new ward for injured, also called Sala Alessandrina, now seat of the Museo Storico Nazionale dell'Arte Sanitaria.
Today, the hospital is part of the "Azienda Sanitaria Locale RM E" and has 200 beds, divided into 11 departments.
It also has 32 different specialist outpatient activities.
