In Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, one of the most important and most extensive squares in the city, is situated ,lateral to the Porta San Giovanni, the imposing facade of the Basilica del Santissimo Salvatore e dei Santi Giovanni Battista e Giovanni Evangelista.
The church is usually called San Giovanni and is the cathedral of Rome.
The architectural body of the basilica is very complex and extends over the entire square: it includes the Palazzo Lateranense (Lateran Palace), the Battistero Lateranense (Lateran Baptistery), and - somewhat detached - the Scala Santa, the Ospedale del Salvatore (hospital) and the Pontificio Ateneo Lateranense (Pontifical Lateran university).
In the middle of the square, in front of the Lateran Palace, is the obelisk, which Sixtus V had brought from the Circus Maximus (Circo Massimo).
The cathedral, dating from the time of Constantine, is composed of an impressive facade with a portico, carried out by A. Galilei in 1732-35.
Above, the central gable is surmounted by a balustrade with 15 statues of Christ, Saint John the Baptist, the Evangelists and church teachers.
The interior, 130 metres long and the five aisles divided by columns, presents itself in the new version of Borromini from the second half of the seventeenth century.
The transept was completely renovated in 1601 by Della Porta.
The presbytery and the apse were renewed by Pope Leo XIII (1886) taking the old forms again.
The church is full of precious relics and graves: this makes it one of the most important religious and tourist destinations of Rome.
