It is situated in the Trajan's Forum and is also visible along the broad Via dei Fori Imperiali.
It was opened after the opening of the Trajan's Forum on May 12, 113 AD.
It is 29.77 metres high, almost 40 metres with the base and the capital, and consists of 18 large overlapping drums.
At the stem of the column there is, in a spiral form, a relief decoration showing, like in a movie, through some 2500 figures the most important phases of the two campaigns conducted by Trajan against the Dacians, what is now Romania, around 100 AD.
Inside there is a spiral staircase up to the Doric capital and is lit by the windows.
At the base, a door below an inscription opens to an area with a small vestibule, it is said that it once housed the golden urn containing the ashes of the emperor.
Leaning against the base, in the fourteenth century the Cappella di San Niccolò was chosen, initially held by a hermit who had put a bell on the top of the column that he rang with a long rope, and therefore used the Column of Trajan as a bell tower.
The chapel was torn down by Pope Paul III, but was then recalled at the nearby Chiesa del Santissimo Nome di Maria with an altar, which was dedicated to St. Nicholas.
At the top of the column, in 1587 Sixtus V placed the statue of St. Peter instead of the statue of Trajan which was carved by Thomas Della Porta and Leonardo Sormani.
