The Roman Forum was the first centre of Rome for trading, religion and politics.
It was built in the valley that stretches from the Palatine to the Capitol and contained a variety of places and buildings that have been modified and developed over time.
Its origin dates back to 600 BC and had the Comizio as a core, an area for public events and the market, so to say the centre of the city life.
From the Comizio there is almost nothing left after it was buried under the Curia, the place of meeting of the Senate, the only remnant of the Comizio is the Lapis Niger, a slab of black marble stone on which there is a landmark of tuff showing the oldest monumental inscription in archaic Latin.
According to the tradition, it indicates the grave of Romulus.
The plain was traversed over its entire length by Via Sacra, so called because it passed between the sacred buildings for religious processions which led along the road in the direction of the Tempio di Giove Capitolino.
The religious aspect was emphasized by the construction of two temples of Saturno and the Dioscuri after 509 BC, from the second century BC, the Forum also received a civilian character due to the construction of the Basilica Giulia and the Basilica Emilia.
The Roman Forum continued its continuous development and change even during the Roman Empire, but due to the actions of Caesar in 46 BC it became the Fori Imperiali, which include many other buildings and land which was built by several other emperors.
Today, the valley of the Forum Romanum, so to say the first forum of the city of Rome, with its archaeological remains and in all its extension is visible from the hill of the Capitol.
