The Palazzo del Quirinale is now a symbol of the Italian State.
It is located at the homonymous hill and the homonymous square and was the residence of the popes since 1592 under Pope Clement VIII, this continuously until the night of July 5, 1808, when there was an attack of 150 Napoleonic soldiers which undertook a daring mission under General Radet by climbing up the walls and entered the building through a window of the Manica Lunga in front of the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea to arrest Pope Pius VII. He did not react and was led to the exit of the building, where a waiting chariot brought him to Fontainebleau.
Thus, the building became the imperial residence of Napoleon until 1814, when the pope returned from exile.
In this building, the four conclaves of the nineteenth century took place, the Cappella Paolina was used for the voting, while the apartments of the cardinals were situated in the Manica Lunga, that wing of the building overlooking Via del Quirinale.
The taking of possession by the king of Italy occurred on the evening of 8 November 1870 by general La Marmora and was a second breakthrough of Porta Pia, breaking down the gates, because the secretary of state, Cardinal Antonelli, refused to hand over the keys.
It was then the residence of the Italian royal family, it was mainly due to the princes Umberto and Margherita to give tone to the palace with large dance parties that were held every Wednesday, alternating with the mundane literary meetings on Thursday.
With Queen Elena, there were also remarkable initiatives such as the use of the Hall of Corazzieri as a tennis court and a place for ice skating, or the construction of a canal for ships sports competitions in front of the stables.
The building was also opened to humanitarian efforts, when in 1915 it a military hospital was housed in the apartments of representation: the dance halls were transformed into lanes with long rows of iron beds.
Since 1947, the Quirinal became the seat of the Presidency of the Republic.
