It is located on the homonymous square on the left side of the Vittoriano, it was built in the fifteenth century by an unknown architect, even if there is much speculation about its authorship: from Leon Battista Alberti to Giuliano da Maiano, from Rossellini to Bernardo Francesco del Borgo.
The building belonged to different owners over the centuries. It was especially papal seat, the building itself was commissioned by Pope Paul II who used it to attend the famous horse races Barberi that took place on Via del Corso to finish right on Piazza Venezia.
It was then transferred to the Republic of Venice (hence the name) which used it as the seat of its embassy in Rome. When Venice fell into the hands of the Habsburgs, the building was used as and headquarters of the Embassy of Austria in 1797 and in 1916 it was transferred to the Italian State. It was a building of representation and the seat of government of Mussolini to 1943.
Inside there is the famous Sala del Mappamondo, the headquarters of Mussolini: His light was always on, to show that the government was diligently and at work without any interruption.
On the front there is a crenellated parapet walk with a massive square tower, the Torre della Biscia, built on an existing medieval tower.
Above the central portal there is the balcony where Mussolini gave many of his speeches.
Inside, the vestibule is particularly interesting with its beautiful coffered ceiling and the large Sala Regia overlooking Via del Plebiscito.
In the south there is, a bit detached, the Palazzetto Venezia with the beautiful courtyard.
Today, inside of the palace there is the seat of one of the world most important libraries: the Library of the National Institute of Archaeology and Art History, a reference point for scientists around the globe.
