Started by Septimius Severus in 206 and opened in 216 by Caracalla, the baths were one of the masterpieces of Roman architecture.
They were restored by Aurelian (270-275) and began to fall apart when in 537, the Goths destroyed the supply systems connected with the Acqua Marcia.
The earthquake of 847 destroyed it then completely.
The rooms contained mostly pools and gyms for gymnastics as well as rooms for leisure, meetings and public education.
The Romans undressed in the Apoditerium, then bathed in hot (caldarium), warm (tepidarium) or cold (frigidarium) water or they could go to the sauna, take a sun bath on the terraces, swim in the outdoor pool (natatio), do sports exercise in the gym and gardens.
There were rooms, restaurants, libraries, rooms for conferences, workshops and gardens.
The complex covered an area of about 330 square metres. The fence, with columns on the right and left of the entrance, enclosed the surrounding gardens and sports fields, the apse contained rooms for conferences and gyms.
In the centre there was the impressive spa whose rooms, which have been changed several times, had ceilings with domes, half domes, barrel vaults, cross vaults and walls in various forms.
The ruins today still suggest a strong sense of the composition and the size of the whole, do not enable to imagine the valuable equipment.
